What is proteinuria?
Proteinuria, like the name, indicates it is the presence of an abnormal amount of protein in the urine. If this happens, there is an increased risk of kidney disease later in life. Proteinuria can be harmful so it is important that treatment is initiated at the right time. Proteinuria treatment in Ayurveda can help a person get better with no ill effects. As kidney function loses more protein can be found in the urine than in the blood. Though it is common to lose a portion of protein, having a large amount means either the kidney is not functioning well or there are small protein molecules in the blood which can easily pass through the filters. How does protein get into urine? Protein gets into the urine because of faults in the glomeruli and nephrons, the tiny loops of capillaries (blood vessels) in the kidneys, remove waste products, and excess water from the blood. Normally glomeruli allow these substances to be removed but not larger proteins. But if smaller proteins may skip through the filters, it means the kidney is not functioning well. However, if the glomeruli or tubules are damaged, it means there is a problem with the re-absorption process and protein may skip along. What causes proteinuria? Proteinuria is caused by conditions that temporarily or permanently affect the kidneys. These conditions can be addressed and the problem of proteinuria or albuminuria can be reversed. Some temporary causes of proteinuria may include low blood pressure, inflammation, dehydration, intense workout, emotional stress, aspirin therapy, infections, or exposure to cold. In many cases, kidney stones also result in protein loss into the urine. But if proteinuria is the result of chronic kidney disease, there could be many chronic conditions being the culprit. If left untreated, such proteinuria can often progress to an end-stage renal disease requiring either dialysis, transplant, or Proteinuria treatment in Ayurveda. Two of the main causes of CKD and proteinuria include diabetes and high blood pressure. Both the conditions are known to inflame the filters of the kidneys thereby allowing the protein to release into the urine. Slowly and gradually they impact the small blood vessels in the kidneys and ultimately progress to chronic kidney disease or CKF. Other causes may include:
What are the symptoms of proteinuria? Not everyone with proteinuria experiences signs of CKD if you are just in the initial stages. The later stages are complicated though and show up signs like:
